Sebulski Sucks

Well, we’re off. I don’t know why, but we’re just not bowling as well as we should be. In all fairness, we didn’t bowl horribly; nobody was struggling to get a 100 or anything like that. But, out of the three games, we only won one and none of us got a turkey. I don’t remember everybody’s score, but there were a few 130s, a few 150s, and at least one 160. Ciggy got the high game for the team, I somehow managed to get a 151, a 152, and a 153 (in that order), and Sam was somewhere a bit lower than that. We only lost the total pin count by about 20 some pins. All I have to say is that we'd better win some games next week.

Highlights: My sequential scores and the fact that we weren’t miserable while we got our asses handed to us.

HoL follow up and a little TV

Well, here it is, a post. Amazing, eh? I thought so.

Mainly, I wanted to point this out to Sam and anyone else who has read and loved Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves. At 384 pages, it seems like a rather measly follow up to HoL, but seeing as HoL was so complex, so experimental, and yet so damn fun, it’s really hard to guess where he’s going with this one. But, it's called Only Revolutions, and it's out this September 5, and I'm insanely excited.

Also, Scrubs is awesome. I know, I’ve said it before, but it’s worth saying again. For those of you who didn’t catch either of the episodes last night, you missed out. The first episode, for no reason whatsoever, was chock-full of allusions to Wizard of Oz. Zach Braff’s character just wanted to go home, but couldn’t, there was a man behind a curtain, three of them needed to find a heart, a brain, and courage, all while walking down a yellow line in the hallway. If there were one reason I would want to buy this season on DVD, it would be to re-watch this episode.

Highlights: All the references, Turk knocking over newly born babies, domino style, and: “Good page, Keith, good page.”

I also caught Boston Legal last night. As a first time watcher, I must say that it took me a bit to get into the characters and the weird kinetic filming that this show employees. And, as Sam told me, “It wasn’t as funny as it normally is.” But, there’s Shatner. And I love Shatner. And I love Shatner interacting with James Spader. And that’s really enough for me to enjoy the show.

Highlight: The self-referential comment of Spader to Shatner, "Oh, there you are, I haven't seen you all episode."

dead whores

Lou Reed just rips into these guys making a Warhol film. "They're all a bunch of whores." says Lou. It's pretty funny.

Geat title "Theresa Russell has some sand in her vagina!" Its about the new Spider Man.

The new 100th episode of Scrubs tonight is a homage to The Wizard of Oz. Should be fun.

I'm sure everyone knows about the "dead body guy". The dude who just wants to be a dead extra in a movie so his wife took a bunch of pictures of him acting dead... and now has a huge following. If you didn't know go to his site.

buying some of Capt. Kirk

"The stone was so big", Shatner said, "you'd want to wear it on your finger." in reference to the kidney stone he sold for $25,000. The money will go to charity. What a great guy.

Fox is getting rid of That 70's Show and Malcolm in the Middle, which isn't to big of a surprise. It also looks like Arrested Development might be moving to Showtime. I don't want to have to get cable. Damn it. Arrested is ending its maybe last session with 4 back to back episodes on Feb. 10. We should have a big farewell party that night.

You may have thought the last Hulk was bad, but the next one is going to be worse. Looks like David Duchovny is going to take over for Bana and the big green guy. Wow that doesn't sound right at all.

coming to a boil

boston legal
Shatner is still getting married, and M.J. Fox is still on. Seeing that I wrote way to much about the golden globes last night I am going to make this short and just give some of the highlights--
-Shatner singing "Time of my life" with Beverly
-Fox helps out with a case and does a really good job. He did really good this whole episode.
-Shatner and Spader dancing together while talking about a case. The close ups of the inlocking fingers was nice.
-Shatner "If you would excuse me I left Beverly on simmer and she should be coming to a boil about now"

The Globes

63rd golden globes
I know that this is going to be all over online but I'm writing it as I watch it. I would rather just write down what I think than sit here talking to myself. So her is my summery of the night...

-best supporting actor-
George Clooney -he looked pretty good. He has been around enough where he doesn't feel like he has to thank everyone he knows so it was a good speech with jokes and all.

-best supporting actress-
Rachel Weisz(Constant Gardener)-I haven't seen the movie yet so I don't really have an opinion on this. Her speech was boring.

-best supporting actor in TV movie/series-
presented by Jessica Alba(who looked amazing) and Luke Wilson-a fun pair-
Paul Newman won for Empire Falls-I have not seen this, but I hear it's good. Paul wasn't there.

-best supporting actress in TV movie/series-
Sandra Oh (Gray's Anatomy)-I've only seen the show a few times. It was OK. She kind of seems annoying.

-best actress TV series drama-
Geena Davis (Commander and Chief)-This is my first big boo of the night. I have seen this show a few times and it is awful.

-best actor TV series drama-
Hugh Laurie (House)-I'm glad he won. I like this show and he kicks ass. He had a pretty funny speech. It's funny that in real life he has an English accent and you would never know it from the show. Good job Hugh.

-best mini series or motion picture made for TV-
Empire Falls- 2nd one of the night. Might have to Netflix it when it goes to DVD.

-best actor TV comedy-
Steve Carell (The Office)- Glad for this one. He gave a good speech. He has had a pretty good year with The Office and 40 Year Old Virgin.
Zach Braff and Jason Lee were also nominated and I would have been happy with any of them.

best actress in comedy/musical-
Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line)-Yes! I think everyone wanted her to win. I know I'm not alone is saying that she made everyone that watched that movie fall in love with her.

-best actress in a TV comedy-
Out of the 5 nominees 4 of them were from Desperate Housewives and Marry-Louise Parker from Weeds ended up winning. I've never seen the show but it sounds funny. I guess she plays a weed dealing mom.

-best actor in a TV movie or mini series-
Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Elvis)-Like a lot of this shit I have never see it. I kind of wanted Bill Nighy (The Girl in the Cafe) to win. I have never seen it but it looks good and Bill was awesome in Love Actually.

-best actress in a TV movie or mini series-
Epatha Merkerson (Lackawanna Blues)--I really didn't care about any of the people that were nominated. The show doesn't look very good.

-best screenplay motion picture-
Brokeback Mountain- Damn good movie and I'm glad it won. When the people went up on stage they had the music from the film playing and just that made me sad. It is such a great tragic movie. I like how one of the writers thanked his typewriter for being a noble machine and keeping him out of the dry embrace of the computer.

-best TV series musical or comedy-
Desperate Housewives-I think they won last year too. It's a good show. I kind of wanted to see My Name is Earl win. That just would have been fun to see Jason Lee win something.

-best foreign language film-
Paradise Now-Have not see it and have nothing to say about it. Promise from China was nominated and that looks pretty cool.

-best original score motion picture-
John Williams (Memoirs of a Geisha)-OK.

-best original song motion picture-
A Love That Will Never Grow Old (Brokeback Mountain)- This is fine but I would have liked to see Mel Brooks win for The Producers song.

Anthony Hopkins got the big Cecil B. Demille award for the night. It was fun seeing a clips from a bunch of his movies from young to old. He is a great actor playing everything from Hitler to Nixon to Hannibal Lector.

-best director motion picture-
Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain)- Good job Lee. It is a hell of a lot different from his other movies and he did a damn good job. I really think that it is one of the better movies this year.

-best actor musical/comedy-
Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line)- I think that everyone is happy about this. He took the biopic, which normally sucks, and made it awesome. I like that he thanked John and June for sharing their lives with us. I would have also really liked to see Johnny Depp or Jeff Daniels win. I just saw the Squid and the Whale yesterday and it was amazing.

-best musical/comedy-
Walk the Line-Yep. Thats what I thought. I love it.
I just want to say that they should give musicals and comedies their own category. Its not really fair to lump them together.

-best TV series drama-
Lost-I have only seen a few and didn't really like it. I hear its awesome if you watch it from the beginning...maybe someday I'll find out. I am kind of surprised that Prison Break was nominated. The OC is better than all of them...it should win comedy and drama.

-best actress in a motion picture drama-
Felicity Huffman (Transamerica)-I really want to see this movie. It looks really fun. It looks like she plays a great man who wants to be a woman. I think this is playing at the lagoon now. We should get a crew together and go see it.

-best actor drama-
Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote)-This is the one award I actually cared about. If Hoffman wouldn't have won I would have been sad. This was an amazing film and it was all because of Hoffman. He can play anything.

-best motion picture drama-
Brokeback Mountain-Could see this one coming and I am glad of it. It is an amazing film. If you haven't seen it you need to.

Over all tonight was pretty good. It's nice to see a lot of good movies nominated. There were really no blockbusters even in the running. It's nice that people are getting sick of that shit and are recognizing the smaller (well I guess because people are recognizing them they aren't really smaller anymore) films. I guess people are just getting better taste...Thank god. I would have liked Capote and The Squid and the Whale to win more, but are least they were nominated.

Sam's best looking award goes to Scarlet Johanson.

PS. I was kind of drunk when I wrote this so if something doesn't make sense don't blame me, blame the So Co.

Dan you add your own opinion to this in italics...

Sebulski: Come Back from Portland

We’re awesome at bowling again. Our lowest game was in the high 140s and our high was 191 (thanks to me). I’m not really sure how we pulled it off, but I’m pretty sure it had something to do with drinking some Sparks beforehand to wake us up. So, I don’t have the exact scores, but here’s a quick summary of what went down:

The team we were playing against is unpredictable. Two of them were so-so, and the other was either extremely good or extremely terrible. He was terrible the first game, and Cigs and I bowled in the 160s, Sam in the 150s. The other guy was doing really well the second game, but I got a 191, Cigs a 181, and Sam a 161, I think. The third game, they fell apart again. I’m not sure what we ended up with, but I was in the 150s, Sam was in the 140s, and Cigs beat me by 6 pins that game, which meant that for the entire night, I beat Cigs by a pin. So, 7 points for us in the league, which will hopefully boost our position a bit.

And, of course, afterwards, we played a little BBH, which I was terrible at. I think Sam won overall, but mostly I was distraught at how impossible it was for me to shoot a stupid deer.

Key moment: Guy on the other team asking us what our team name (Seivy Sebulski) meant. Cigs was all, fucking ha-ha giggly about it for some stupid reason. But I explained to the guy that we named our team after our childhood friend with whom we used to bowl, but he moved out to Portland, and then I had to also explain that Ciggy never got along with him and that’s why he was giggling…but really its because his name is Jayne and he’s a little girl.

Also: Hostel is playing at Willowgate (Wynnsong) at noon on Saturday. This work for you guys?

I'm insensitive + miscellany

This article is attempting to point out that Fat Americans are tending toward a state of complacency when it comes to their weight. It tries to put it in a positive spin: “With about two-thirds of U.S. adults overweight, Americans' attitudes toward overweight people are shifting from rejection toward acceptance, researchers have found.” Acceptance? I think it’s called laziness. I interviewed a few of the "overweight" and they seemed to say something like, “Yeah, sure, I know I’m fat, but now I just don’t give a shit. I mean, I don’t have time to worry about losing weight; I’ve got more eating to do.”

In lieu of my review of Hostel (yet to be written), here’s one written by the Horror Geek over at IGN. It’s pretty positive, which is nice for me because I agree with a lot of what he’s saying.

And, in case anyone cares, Altman is getting the lifetime achievement award during the Oscars.

I'm really hungry

hey everyone is getting married. Macauley Culkin is wedding Meg Griffin/Jackie Burkhart/Mila Kunis. And Jack Black is marrying Tanya Haden. Also Brad confirms that him and Lara Croft are together and pregnant. I think she already has like 50 kids but this will be the first one that is actually hers. I think all the adopted kids will be the real one's slaves.

Grayskull Mountain. Pretty funny...go look at it.

Maybe I'm just behind but I just heard about David Fincher's new movie Zodiac. It sounds pretty damn cool.

Crumbs might be pretty funny. It's the new ABC show staring our favorite wonder boy Fred Savage. I won't be watching it. It is on during the OC. By the way I will always watch the OC, but it really pisses me off how 60% of the good TV is on Thursdays at 8. The OC, the Office and My name is Earl, and maybe Crumbs if that ends up being very good. Goddamn. Anyway someone who doesn't watch the OC (god forgive you) should watch Crumbs and let me know how it is.

god like shell

Boston Legal--
Starts out with a charity where Shatner is the honoree and giving a speech. Almost misses his speech because he was having sex in the coat room with some lady he met at the bar. Shatner "It's funny I just had sex with this woman and she gave me her card and I have no desire to throw it away."

M. J. Fox guest stars as some rich guy dying of cancer. He hits on his lawyer. Overall he does a pretty good job. He is really getting old, but he didn't seem to shaky.

Shatner, about the coat room girl who says she wants to fulfill every fantasy on his list...yes he has a list, "Its like having a one night stand, every night, with the same woman."

Shatner had sex on his desk and forgot to close the blinds on the hallway window. He gets yelled at and says "I'm sorry. From now on, in this office, the blinds go down before anything else does."

At the end--Shatner "Did I tell you I'm are getting married?"
Spader "No" ...long pause... "I would have remembered that."
I really don't think they will end up getting hitched, at least I hope not.

God there is so much good shit on this show I could quote the whole thing. If you don't already you really need to start watching it. Next to the OC it is by far the best show on TV. Tuesday nights at 9 on channel 5.

Spader talking to another lawyer. "You know I have an extreme affection for my own intelligence, and even I know your smarter than me."

Highlight-
Shatner--"As god like as I seem to you and other people I am mortal inside this god like shell, and I am not a one woman man."
"Denny Crane as long as we're together feel free to have sex with anyone you'd like."
"God I love you."

Retain the Right to Ridicule

Comedy Central has denied claims that they pulled a future episode of South Park due to pressure from some religious fanatics. Instead, they pulled it because of the holidays, and then said, “As satirists, we believe that it is our First Amendment right to poke fun at any and all people, groups, organizations and religions and we will continue to defend that right.” I may not be a satirist, but I think I retain that right too.

Where the Wild Things Are still might get made, which is awesome because Spike Jonze is fantastic and the book is fantastic.

And I linked this in the Pandas comments, but I thought I’d post it here too. Uwe Boll being an idiot.

Chenkuye

Well the WB is obviously trying to copy the success of Smallville with its new show Aquaman. I started watching Smallville when it first came out and I really liked it, but then I just kind of stopped and now whenever I randomly see and episode it seems like its gone downhill. Might have to check out at least the pilot of Aquaman and see if its any good.

God Rachel just keeps on getting more and more perfect. I didn't know she was half Italian. There is a short interview with her here.

PS-New episode this week.

PPS-I'm going to marry her

I don't know if you guys know about this or not, but you should go to Kazakhstanis Against Borat. It's pretty damn funny.
"America national sport is called baseballs. It very similar to our sport, shurik, where we take dogs, shoot them in a field, and then have a party." -Borat

And Josh talks about maybe getting Firefly back on TV here.

Monday, January 9

you shot a cow

Alright, I don't have much time so here is the short bowling rap up. I started off doing pretty damn good. I got a lot of strikes. I think around 10 turkey chances and just one turkey. Dan also had one turkey and Ciggy had two. Ciggy had high game of 180-something. We all ended pretty close for nightly pin total. Next week Craig Christ will be back with us. It will be nice to have teams again. I got kind of drunk and sucked at Big Buck Hunter after. BBH is the 2nd best sport in the world, next to bowling. Dan can add more details to this if he wants but I'm out of time.

PS-- I guess the Joker will be the next villain for Bale, and Adrien Brody wants to play him...I think that would kick ass

the eyes of a ranger are upon you

Everyone needs to read this article. It starts out with "Chuck Norris does not sleep. He waits. Chuck Norris frequently donates blood to the Red Cross. Just not his own." It is all about the greatness of Mr. Norris, his cult following and why he is such an icon in todays world.

--Favorite quotes--
-Chuck Norris' tears cure cancer. Too bad he has never cried.
-Wilt Chamberlain claims to have slept with more than 20,000 women in his lifetime. Chuck Norris calls this "a slow Tuesday.
-Chuck Norris does not go hunting because "hunting" implies a chance of failure. Chuck Norris goes killing.
-There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.

Side note-I took karate lessons from one of Chuck's stunt doubles out in Oregon. He looked exactly like him...it was awesome.

The New NBC drama "Book of Daniel" debuts tonight. Christians are boycotting it for some reason. Its about an "Episcopal priest who has a prescription-drug problem, a gay son and regular conversations with Jesus." Everyone should come over before Hostel and watch it. If you don't think you want to watch it just go look at this picture.

Devil's Due is releasing a new G.I. Joe vs Transformers: The Art of War comic. It looks like it is going to kick ass. I'm pretty excited. Writer Tim Seeley, "Writing these characters has the charm of meeting up with old friends; a pleasure, a privilege, but also a war! … Consider this the end-all, beat down of wars!"

RIP Pervis Loinflash

It is my sad duty to announce that my friend Justin's hampster, Pervis Loinflash, has died. I expect all of you to go to his blog and write your condolences.

Notes

Notes on bowling: We won one game out of three. We now officially suck on Thursdays. Some games in the 160s, some in the 150s, some in the 140s, some worse…specifics are not important here. All I know is that we better start kicking ass in our league.

Notes on playing the bowling arcade game in the bar: Sam kicked our asses. He won both series we played. I was feeling drunk and sucked it up big time. Silver Strike is the new Great Way to Kill Time in the Bar.

Notes on Hostel: k(i)d sez: “Hostel is playing at Willowgate (Wynsong) at 7:30, 9:30, and 11:50. I intend to go to one of these shows.” I, too, intend to go, and would vie for the 9:30 show. Comment if you’re In or Out or have other suggestions that I may acknowledge but probably ignore.

good news all around

Cool article here about Phoenix and Shooter going to Folsom.

About time they get rid of Billy. Jon Stewart is going to host the Oscars this year. They might be worth watching.

Wow even more good news. Futurama might be starting up again.

Go watch the trailer for Pan's Labyrinth. It looks damn cool. Directed by Guillermo del Toro...the guy who gave us Blade II and Hellboy. The rest of you don't matter, but if you are Dan or Ciggy you should really watch it.

I don't mean to gloat, but...

…I had one of the better bowling nights of my life last night. I know what you’re thinking: “Last night was Wednesday, right?” Yes, it was. But Kate and I were sitting around the house, bored, and randomly decided to go bowling. I figured that I had missed Sunday because I was out of town, and I could use the warm up for the big league night tonight. So, this is a summary of how awesome I am:

Out of 7 games, only 1 was below a 160. I had two 160s, a 161, 162, 168, a 176, and then some shitty 130 game. In the third game, I was trying to beat my as of then high score of 162, and had 108 in the eighth frame, no marks. I bowled 4 strikes in a row to finish with a 168, and then continued to bowl 2 more strikes the next game for a total of 6 in a row. I picked up a split, averaged 160, and was overall amazing at bowling. I just need to do that well tonight.

Highlights for Kate: Two doubles, and she didn’t get insanely pissed when I beat her by 60 pins.

Scrubs, how I've missed you...

Because of the weird changeup in TV stations’ schedules, I was able to catch the season premiere of Scrubs last night. It’s been a while since I’ve watched the show, but its always had a place in my heart because of its hilarious absurdity and faux-sincere montage endings that really turn out to be big jokes overall. So, I was pretty excited to watch a full hour of it last night…

And it didn’t disappoint. In recent interviews with Zach Braff, he’s mentioned that they weren’t sure if the show was going to be cancelled or not (why oh why are the stupid TV networks trying to pull all the good shows?), so they decided to amp up the wackiness of the show…Braff’s character getting shoved into a small backpack, cool CG effects to show Turk dropping a birth control pill into his wife's mouth, and on and on…

The bottom line is that the show makes me laugh. I might not be laughing throughout the entire 30 minute episode, but when the jokes work, they really work.

Key moment: The multi-ethnic siamese twin doctors.

my first review of the new year so far

Hey, I have the internet again, which means I'm back at school. A lot has happened during the break, and yet nothing really that interesting happened. Movies were watched, books were read, music was listened to, pins were nocked down, booze was drunk and nights were forgotten. That about sums up the last few weeks of last year, maybe throw a little family and a lot of food in the mix. Enough about last year...what has been going on this year? We are already in our 3rd day of 06 and its going pretty good so far. On the first day of the year I woke up on Ciggy's couch at about 10am extremely dehydrated. I watched Four Brothers, which is a damn good movie,a lot of fun, and you can't go wrong with Marky Mark and Andre 3000. After that we watched the Ali G movie. Now this is pretty good, not as good as the show, but it did have a few amazing parts. Soon after that I found myself on my couch watching Dead Man and then some TV.
Ciggy came over and we went bowling (bitch dan was out of town). 2 lanes + 2 people = 2 hot, sweaty, tired guys. Me and Ciggy were both a little tired already from the 10 hours of drinking the night before so we didn't have a shit load of energy. Bowling was uneventful for the most part. Ciggy bowled a 189 or something like that. My high was around 165. I had like 5 turkey chances, and got 1...Ciggy had 1. We had fun even though we bowled about as bad as the cute little high-school girls next to us.
After bowling Ciggy came back to my place and we watched Three Kings (2 Marky Mark films in one day...kick ass) and Serenity. The next day we woke up about 1ish. After watching Magnum P.I. we went to buy Firefly (the TV show Serenity is based on). First we tried the Target on Lexington...they were out, but I still picked up The Ghost and the Darkness and Payback, both of which were $7.50. Next we tried the new Target by Har Mar. They were also out. So I got a Merle Haggard best of CD. Normal people might have given up at this point, but me and Ciggy are far from normal. So now we are off to Best Buy. Yes they have it, but god forbid that I don't buy something at every store we stop at, so I picked up the new Ryan Adams cd 29.
We got back to my place about 3 o'clock and after much soda and frozen pizzas and cigarettes and cowboy/samuri/sci-fi fun Ciggy left around 1. We have 3 episodes left, which we are going to finish on Thursday(so get ready Dan). Firefly is amazing. I suggest you watch Serenity and if you like it (which I'm sure you will) go watch Firefly.
Wow I just wrote way to much and if you made it this far...good job. The first 2 days of the year were awesome, but now I'm back at school sitting in class for 3 hours and I'm ready for next year...

an update?

So...It's been a while. Sam's been away from the internets for a while (as he's been away from school) and I've been all over the Midwest for the holidays. I'm hoping to jump back into my normal routine and have this thing updated more frequently. TV's been all over the place...reruns have been shown, shows have been cancelled and then not cancelled (e.g., Arrested Development), movies have been watched and not reviewed...pretty much, there's been a general sad state of media watching and blog updating. Perhaps the new years will change things.

Also: I don't know where the comments went. Last I looked, they weren't there. Strange. Sam's the one that set us up with haloscan, so I'll leave that to him to look into. Other than that, expect some capsule reviews of various things within the next few days.
